Capers finish home schedule with convincing 4-0 victory over Axemen

SYDNEY – The Cape Breton University (CBU) CAPERS (7-0-2) wrapped up their home schedule with a convincing 4-0 victory over the visiting Acadia Axemen (1-7-3) in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) soccer action on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 6) at Ness Timmons Field on campus.
In the third minute, Amadou Bayo (Montreal, QC) scored on a diving header on a strong cross from Cameron Kilbride (Blackpool, ENG) to make it 1-0 for the home side.
Owen Sheppard (St. John's, ENG) darted down the left wing, at the eight-minute mark, and fed Evan Cunningham (Lancashire, ENG), the Subway player of the game, who – in close quarters – uncoiled a shot that bent the twine in the top left corner to double the CBU edge.
Cunningham, with his second, made it 3-0. His initial shot, off another dish from Kilbride, was saved by defender Xavier Hill (Dartmouth, NS), but the first-year CAPER made no mistake on the rebound opportunity.
In the 41st minute, the dynamic Harvey Hughes (Southampton, Hampshire) – on a great individual effort – made a run and tucked a left-footed strike into the far corner; a shot that Acadia keeper Connor Burns (Halifax, NS) had no chance to save.
The CAPERS led 4-0 heading to the locker room.
In the second half, there were few offensive opportunities for both sides.
Acadia had a chance to break the shutout when their player of the game – Jabu Deng (Halifax, NS) – the Axemen's player of the game - crossed to Sam Young (Halifax, NS) who tested CBU keeper Daniel Clarke (Milton Keynes, ENG), but came up empty.
The best CBU chance of the second half came off the toe of Jamie Nicholson (North Petherton, ENG), who was turned aside by Burns between the pipes for Acadia.
The CAPERS finished with a 6-1 edge in shots on goal.
To mark CBU Senior Day, the CAPERS men's soccer program and CBU Athletics honoured Daniel Clarke (Milton Keynes, ENG), Mateo Goldsztein (Winnipeg, MB), Carter Brown (Lingan, NS), Elijah Le (Vaughan, ON), Sebastian Cochrane (Toronto, ON), Owen Sheppard and Cameron Kilbride, who were playing in their final home matches.
The CAPERS will return to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 9, when they travel to Antigonish to face the defending AUS champion STFX X-Men at STFX Stadium, while the Axemen will host the UPEI Panthers on Friday, Oct. 18, in Wolfville.
Game time for both match-ups is 7:15 p.m. ADT.
