Capers power past Sea Hawks

There was no doubt who the defending AUS women’s basketball champions were at the Sullivan Fieldhouse is Sydney Sunday.
The Cape Breton University Capers jumped out to a 10-point halftime lead and dominated down the stretch to complete a weekend sweep of the Memorial Sea Hawks with a 79-53 victory.
The win evened the Capers record at 5-5 in AUS play and moved them into fourth spot in the conference standings, just six points behind MUN.
Cassie Cooke led the Capers offence, hooping 21 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Fifth-year post Stephanie Toxopeus was named Eastside Mario’s Player of the Game after recording a double-double. The Kanata, ON native was 7-of-11 from the field, finishing with 16 points and 12 boards.
Vicki Thistle also broke double figures for the Capers with 15 points and five rebounds. Jahlica Kirnon chipped in with seven points and seven assists for the winners.
For the game, CBU shot 51 per cent from the field while holding MUN to just 39 per cent.
Alexandria Forsey with 17 points and six rebounds and Kelia Pond with 17 points and five rebounds were top players for the Sea Hawks.
CBU will be back in action this Friday when they take on the first-place St. Mary’s Huskies at The Tower in Halifax.
