Capers win fifth straight

Fifth-year post Stephanie Toxopeus dominated inside as the Cape Breton university Capers women’s basketball team pushed their winning streak to five games with an 86-78 victory over the visiting University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds Friday at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
Toxopeus, a native of Kanata, ON, was 10-pf-13 from the floor and finished with 25 points and seven rebounds as the Capers improved to 8-5 on the season.
Cassie Cooke added 18 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals for the winners who shot 50 per cent for the contest.
Other Capers in double figures were former Varsity Red Jessica Steed with 12, Jahlica Kirnon with 11 and Tanira McClurkin with 10. McClurkin also had eight assists and three steals.
Second-year forward Kayla McCarron, an AUS All Rookie team member last season, had just six points, but grabbed seven offensive boards and added four assists in 20 minutes off the bench.
Clair Colborne led the Varsity Reds offence, finishing with a game-high 28 points.
Jordanne Holstein with 12 and Melissa Foster with 10 were other top scorers for UNB.
The two teams will square off again Saturday in a 1 p.m. start at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
