January 28, 2012
Cassie Cooke had a 22-point first half and Stephanie Toxopeus finished with a double-double as the Cape Breton University Capers rolled to a 100-59 victory over the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds in AUS women’s basketball action at the Sullivan Fieldhouse Saturday.
Cooke, who took home Eastside Mario’s Player of the Game honours, was eight-of-12 in the first half including six three-pointers as the Capers jumped out to a 51-26 halftime advantage. There was no let down for CBU who took advantage of a 27-4 third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Cooke, a first-year guard from Westminster, MD, finished with 32 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Capers, who improved to 9-5 on the year.
Toxopeus, who had a 25-point performance in Friday’s win, was nearly unstoppable again, hooping 19 points and grabbing 14 rebounds as the Capers won their sixth straight game.
Jessica Steed in her final regular season contest against her former team, added 10 points, seven assists and five steals while Vicki Thistle chipped in with 10 points and seven boards for CBU.
Claire Colborne led UNB in scoring, knocking down 17 points in a losing cause. Jordanne Holstein was the only other member of the Varsity Reds to crack double figures with a 12-point outing.
CBU will enjoy a rare weekend off this week before another pair of home games February 11 and 12 when they host the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers and the Acadia Axewomen.
