Capers big winners on and off the court

Saturday was the fifth annual Shoot for the Cure and the Cape Breton University Capers women’s basketball team was up to the task both on and off the court.
Donning their pink uniforms, the Capers rolled off their seventh consecutive win with a convincing 100-63 victory over the visiting University of Prince Edward Island Panthers at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
Cassie Cooke was 14-of-21 from the floor, including six three pointers, and finished with 36 points for the Capers, who improved to 10-5 on the season.
Cooke also had seven assists, three rebounds and three steals on the night.
Fifth-year guard Jahlica Kirnon was named Eastside Mario’s Player of the Game after posting 18 points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Stephanie Toxopeus had 16 points and eight boards while Vicki Thistle chipped in with 13 points for the winners.
Emily MacEachern with 14 points and Amy Gough with 12 points were top scorers for the Panthers.
Off the court, the Capers women helped with the Shoot for the Cure fundraiser, which for the fifth straight year raised more than $10,000 for breast cancer research.
CBU will be back in action Sunday when they battle the league-leading Acadia Axewomen in a 2 p.m. start at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
