Capers extend win streak to eight games

The Cape Breton University Capers ran their winning streak to eight games with a solid 88-71 victory over the Acadia Axewomen in AUS women’s basketball action Sunday in Sydney.
The win improved the Capers to 11-5 on the season and into a second place tie in the AUS standings with the Saint Mary’s Huskies. The win ended a 13-game winning streak for the first-place Axewomen, who lost for just the second time this season.
Cassie Cooke capped off an already stellar weekend, earning Eastside Mario’s Player of the Game honours with a game high 28 point performance.Cooke had 36 points in Saturday's 100-63 victory over the UPEI Panthers.
The second-year guard from Westminster, MD also had six rebounds, five assists and two steals for the winners.
Jahlica Kirnon added 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Capers while Tanira McClurkin chipped in with 14 points and six assists.
Jasmine Parent had the hot hand for the Axewomen, hitting on 10-of-14 field goals and finishing with a team-high 25 points.
Kristy Moore was the lone other Acadia player to break double digits, finishing with 14 points.
Emma Duinker, who leads Acadia in scoring with an 18.2 points per game average was held to just seven by the Capers.
CBU will be home again this Wednesday when they host their archrivals, the StFX X-Women in a 6 p.m. start at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
