A pair of weekend road victories insured the Cape Breton University Capers women's basketball team of second place overall in the AUS and a firsdt round bye in the AUS championship tournament scheduled for March 2-4 in Antigonish.
It marks the ninth time in 10 years the Capers have finished in the top two teams in the conference and with a win this Saturday against UPEI, the Capers will have finished with 15 wins or better in each of the last 10 seasons.
Sunday at the Dalplex, CBU pushed their winning streak to 11 games with a 76-62 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers.
Cassie Cooke led the Capers attack with 26 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals as CBU improved to 14-5 in conference play.
Jahlica Kirnon had 14 points and five boards for the winners while Jessica Steed contributed 10 points off the bench.
Courtney Thompson with 19 points and Alex Legge with 12 points were top scorers for Dalhousie.
In the weekend opener Saturday, Cooke posted a career-high 38 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals as the Capers upended the Tigers 89-75.
It was the fourth consecutive game that Cooke, a 5'8" guard from Westminster, MD, broke the 30-point plateau.
Kirnon added 14 points and Stephanie Toxopeus 11 points for the Capers.
Vicki Thistle chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds in a winning cause.
Thompson led all Tigers in scoring, finishing with 19 points.
Anna von Maltzahn posted a double-double for Dalhousie with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
CBU will finish the regular season this Saturday when they face the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers in Charlottetown.
