Capers complete sweep of Tigers
November 20, 2011
The difference a day can make.
One day after rolling past the Dalhousie Tigers 93-56, the Cape Breton University Capers women’s basketball team found themselves in a battle on Saturday afternoon at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
Poor first half shooting left the Capers trailing the visitors 38-31 at halftime, but the three-time defending AUS champions were not to be denied, exploding for 32 points in the third quarter and never looking back enroute to an 85-77 win.
Cassie Cooke led the Capers offence, finishing with 21 points, four rebounds and four assists. Vicki Thistle with 19 points, five boards and five assists and Jahlica Kirnon with 13 points were other top scores for CBU, which improved to 2-1 on the season.
Fifth-year guard Nicole Works, who sparked the Capers in the third, took home the East Side Mario’s Player of the Game award, finishing with seven points, six assists and two steals.
Keisha Brown had a game high 27 points for the Tigers while Tessa Stammberger chipped in with 13 points in a losing cause.
The Capers will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Fredericton for a pair of games with the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds.
