Capers women trumped by UNB in hoops action
A short-staffed Cape Breton University Capers women’s basketball team was handed a 70-65 loss by the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds in Atlantic University Sport action Friday at the Currie Centre.
The Capers entered the game without veterans Nicole Works and Jahlica Kirnon, who are sidelined until the new year with knee injuries. CBU’s record fell to 2-2 with the loss.
“We played horribly, didn’t stick to a game plan and let their best player score 34 points,” said Capers head coach Fabian McKenzie. “We played with no discipline and we didn’t take care of the ball. It was an all-out bad effort overall. We have a lot of work to do.”
Claire Colborne drained 34 points for the victors, shooting 13-for-27 from the floor. Jordanne Holstein dropped 13 points. UNB held a 37-34 advantage at recess.
Stephanie Toxopeus paced the Capers offence with 17 points. Cassie Cooke followed with 11 and Hope Edwards added 10.
“We were missing a lot of leadership out there and we didn’t take care of the ball,” said McKenzie. “We have to do a better job of that.”
In men’s play, the Capers used a balanced attack in a 76-71 win over the Varsity Reds.
Four Capers finished the game in double digits. Arild Geugjes led the way with 19 points, followed by Jimmy Dorsey with 18. Julian Smith scored 13 and Al Alilovic scored 12 and hauled down 11 rebounds.
CBU led the game by a narrow 38-37 score at halftime. They evened their record to 2-2.
Daniel Quirion replied with 18 points for UNB. Alex DesRoches scored 16 and gobbled up 14 rebounds and Michael Fosu chipped in 12 points.
