Capers edged by Sea-Hawks
January 15, 2013
The Cape Breton University Capers put together a late drive in the fourth quarter, but the Memorial Sea-Hawks held on for a 58-55 win in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action Monday at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
The Capers trailed 32-29 after a back-and-fourth opening half. The Sea-Hawks created some breathing room in the third quarter and were up 52-45 heading into the fourth.
CBU went on a nine-point run to start the fourth quarter, sparked by Brittany Hollins and Naudia Campbell.
Colleen Keane gave the Capers a 54-52 lead with four minutes left in the game.
But Memorial, after taking a timeout, swung the momentum back in their favour thanks to the play of Alexandria Forsey, who put back a pair of baskets in the paint to regain the lead. Emily Jameson scored a couple of free throws to seal the deal with only seconds remaining.
Capers head coach Fabian McKenzie said his team battled harder in the second half, which he calls a good sign from his young roster.
“We were sloppy to start and that wasn’t good, but I challenged them at halftime to do the little things that we needed to get better at,” said McKenzie. “We had some game goals. We wanted to hold them to a certain amount of rebounds and we almost got that and we had a game goal for defensive points allowed and we reached that goal.
“We did some little things better in that second half and that’s what helped us get back into it. Naudia Campbell played well, but she got into foul trouble, so she has to learn to play without getting into foul trouble.”
Jameson led all scorers with 16 points, while Grace Fishbein followed with 11. Forsey finished the game with 10 points and six rebounds.
For the Capers, Hollins fired 14 points, Tanira McClurkin scored 12 and Campbell added nine.
Hollins said her team’s hustle and effort was better, something they hope to continue in today’s rematch.
“I hope that we play with the same energy, but the execution needs to be a little bit better,” she said. “We just need to capitalize and pay attention to details to close the game. (Monday), we played well, but just the little things would have got us the actual win.”
The loss drops CBU’s record to 2-8, while the Sea-Hawks improved to 4-5. Memorial has a four-point lead over the Capers for fifth place in the AUS standings.
