Keane's three pointer gives Capers win over Sea-Hawks
January 16, 2013
Colleen Keane's three pointer with 1.6 seconds left in the game gave the Cape Breton University Capers a 60-57 victory over the Memorial Sea-Hawks in AUS women's basketball action Tuesday at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
The Capers women turned the tables on the Sea-Hawks, who edged the homeside 58-55 on Monday.
In the women’s tilt, CBU held a 35-29 lead at halftime. The Sea-Hawks surged in the second half, but Keane’s shot with time winding down ensured the victory.
Capers head coach Fabian McKenzie said they drew up a play in the final moments to draw attention to post player Naudia Campbell, but got an open Keane the ball.
“It’s big for (Keane). We’ve told all our players that up until they show us differently, we want them to shoot the ball. I encourage players to play and I’ve been encouraging Colleen to shoot the ball a lot and she didn’t,” he said. “(Tuesday), she decided to attack a little more and play and she didn’t hesitate when she caught it, she shot it and it was good. She’s a very good shooter and is a talented young lady. We want her to be in those situations to learn how to win them again later.”
Keane paced her team’s offence with 14 points and hauled down 10 rebounds, nine of which came at the defensive end of the floor. Tanira McClurkin followed with eight points, while Brittany Hollins added seven.
“We had to have a better start,” said McKenzie. “We talked about the adjustments we had to make and I think defensively, we turned it up a little bit to where we want it to be. I think we had two very solid days defensively, but again, we just have to find ways to score.
“I’m pleased with the start and that got us on a good roll. We battled the whole way, which was key.”
The Sea-Hawks replied with 15 points from Grace Fishbein, Kim Devison had 14, Emily Jameson had 12 and Ally Forsey had eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
CBU improved its record to 3-7 for six points, two back of Memorial (4-6) for fifth place in the AUS standings.
It’s a quick turnaround for the CBU clubs. They return to action this weekend at Sullivan Fieldhouse against Acadia. Saturday, the women’s teams meet at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8 p.m. Sunday, the women hit the court at 2 p.m., and the men play at 4 p.m.
