Capers fall to Axewomen

The Cape Breton University Capers women’s basketball team struggled at both ends of the floor, dropping a pair of weekend contests to the Acadia Axewomen Saturday and Sunday at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
Acadia, ranked No. 9 in the CIS, improved to 8-2 on the year with an 84-62 victory Saturday before closing out the two-game set with a 71-59 win Sunday. CBU fell to 3-9 in conference play.
Sunday, the Capers took an 18-16 lead through one quarter, but couldn’t slow down the Axewomen, who ran off a 22-8 edge in the second frame to head to halftime leading 38-26.
Brittany Hollins scored a team-high 15 points for the Capers while also grabbing eight rebounds.
Tanira McClurkin added 11 points, while Colleen Keane and Jaylnn Skeir finished with nine points apiece in a losing cause.
Lindsay Harris had 20 points and seven boards for the winners. Kristy Moore with 15 points and Abbey Duinker with 13 were other top scorers for Acadia.
Saturday, Keane had 16 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Capers, who fell behind early and were never able to gain ground on the Axewomen.
Naudia Campbell had 14 points and eight boards for CBU, while Hollins finished with nine points.
Rachel Savage had a game-high 30 points to lead Acadia to Saturday’s win.
The Capers teams will be on the road next weekend for games Saturday at Saint Mary’s and Sunday at Dalhousie.
