Capers nip Panthers 66-60

The Cape Breton University Capers defeated the UPEI Panthers in AUS Women's basketball action at Sullivan Fieldhouse in Sydney on Friday night. The Capers rode a strong third quarter to a 66-60 victory over the Panthers.

Colleen Keane and Allison Keough led the way on offence for the Capers, netting 16 points each in the win. Keane also added 12 rebounds and four assists, while Keough grabbed seven rebounds for the Capers.

However, it was Jalynn Skeir's third quarter that gave the Capers a big lead that they did not look back from. Skeir caught fire, going 3-4 from beyond the three point line, which accounted for nine of her 12 points in the game.

"I didn't really have anything on my mind" Skeir said, "I was just focused on the next three, the next shot that I had. I had to take it and knock it down."

Amy Gough paced the Panthers' offence with a team-high 11 points, while Candace Smith came off of the bench for an impressive 9 points. Laura Power and Anne Kiberd also contributed to the scoring effort with eight points each.

The Capers and Panthers played to a 30-30 tie at halftime, but CBU separated themselves after winning the third quarter 23-11. UPEI made a run late in the fourth quarter, but the Capers were able to hold on for the victory.

"The mental lapses that we had in the fourth quarter that led to their comeback— we need to cut those down a bit," Skeir said, "But with us, we just need to keep working hard and pushing through to the next game."

The Capers surpassed UPEI in the AUS standings with the win on Friday and claimed second place behind Saint Mary's. The two teams have a rematch at Sullivan Fieldhouse at 1pm on Saturday, where they will continue to jostle for second place in the AUS standings.
