SYDNEY, NS - The Cape Breton Univeristy CAPERS beat the UNB Varsity Reds on Friday night at the Sullivan Field House in both team's opening game at the Debbie Ruiz Memorial Tournament. The game was tied at the half and entering the 3rd-quarter. The CAPERS used a strong 4th-qaurter to pull away from their AUS rival and win the game 64-54.
The CAPERS were led offensivley by Colleen Keane (Scarborough, ON) with 22pts and Natasha Roach (Roxboro, QC) with 16pts. Allison Keough (Marion Bridge, NS) also chipped in 10 points for the CAPERS who are now 2-0 in preseason action. UNB was led by Grace Wade with 15pts. The CAPERS used perfectly timed 3 pointers to pull away down the stretch and were 5 of 8 overall from deep.
Both teams will be in action Saturday at the Sullivan Field House. Toronto will play the University of New Brunswick at 6pm, while McGill will play tournament host Cape Breton University CAPERS at 8pm.
Debbie Ruiz was a former all-star athlete with the CAPERS and recently passed away from cancer.
