Antigonish, NS – The Cape Breton Capers came ready to play on Saturday night as they defeated the StFX X-Women 87-34 on Coach K Court at the StFX Oland Centre.
The visitors played a strong first quarter on both sides of the ball – scoring 27 points and holding the X-Women to only six points in the quarter.
Guard Toni Bianchini (Groves Point, NS) scored 10 points for the Capers to open the game as her team forced the X-Women to take outside shots and unfortunately for the home squad the baskets were not converting. StFX shot only 11.8% from field goal range in the opening quarter.
The Capers continued their strong play in the second quarter, outscoring the X-Women 17-7 to take a 44-13 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The X-Women were held to another seven points in the third quarter to the Capers 26. The Capers played a disciplined game, keeping the X-Women away from the free throw line until the fourth quarter.
Bianchini ended with 17 points for Cape Breton, earning her Subway player of the game honours. Veteran centre Hannah Brown scored a game-high 22 points and hauled in 10 rebounds for a double-double night, while freshman guard MacKenzee Ryan (Glace Bay, NS) scored 14 points including four from beyond the three-point arc.
Fifth-year veteran centre Alison Keogh (Marion, Bridge, NS) posted a game-high 14 rebounds for Cape Breton and scored 14 points. Her squad out-rebounded the X-Women 48-33.
The game marked the final one of the first term for both squads. With the win, the Capers improve to 4-3 and pick up four points in the AUS standings. The Capers next see action in St. John's, NF when they face Memorial, also on January 6th.
