Sydney, N.S - Alison Keough of Marion Bridge has been the model of consistency in her long career with the Cape Breton Capers women's basketball team, and the numbers don't lie.
Keough, a fifth-year forward, is close to becoming the Capers all-time leading scorer. She has 1,550 career points, only 38 back of record holder Kelsey Hodgson (2005-10) who finished with 1,588. Keough's point total currently puts her ninth all-time in Atlantic University Sport.
As for rebounds, Keough has 914 in her career, only 12 back of former Saint Mary's Huskies star Julie Galipeau's AUS record of 926.
The CAPERS have eight regular season games remaining. The CAPERS (7-5) travel to Prince Edward Island for a pair of games against the Panthers (6-6) this weekend. The CAPERS women play at 6 pm on Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday. Both games can be seen live on AusTv.ca
"I honestly didn't know I was that close until I read it," said the 22-year-old, a member of last year's AUS champion Capers team. "If it happens, it happens. If it doesn't, it doesn't. It's the end of my career and I'm pretty satisfied with my career, so all that stuff, it doesn't really tickle my fancy, I guess.
"I just want to win games and I'm happy with this year and how people have really stepped up."
Keough was recently named both the AUS and U Sports female athlete of the week.
She and AUS leading scorer Hannah Brown of North Sydney have been dominant in the post this season. Brown is averaging 18.1 points per game, while Keough has scored 16.6 points per game.
"This year, we just try to feed off each other and read off each other and having two bigs on the floor, it makes the high/low game easier," said Keough, who played for Canada's women's national development team at the World University Games last summer. "I enjoy it and Hannah is having a great year. I'm happy for her."
Capers head coach Fabian McKenzie said Keough has been a tremendous role model for young girls in Cape Breton.
"She walked in the door, was rookie of the year in the country, and never stopped," he said. "It's been the same night in, night out. You know you're going to get double figures in points and double figures in rebounds because she's so versatile. She's such a good athlete at her position."
