CAPERS fall short against Axewomen

WOLFVILLE, N.S. -- The Acadia Axewomen swept the two-game series against the Cape Breton Capers with an 80-69 win on Sunday.

The Capers and the Axewomen played a close first quarter. Jayda Veinot (Port Williams, N.S.) put up 9 points and went 4/4 from the line to lead her team offensively. Cape Breton was up 18-16 after the first 10 minutes. Acadia struggled in the second, managing to only score 9 points. The Capers took advantage and increased their lead to eight and posted a 33-25 halftime lead.

The home team bounced back from their rough second quarter with 29 points in the third. More than doubling their efforts from the first half, the Axewomen pushed out to a 54-43 lead. Veinot continued her hot streak from the free-throw line, improving to 8/8 after three quarters. She would finish a perfect 16/16 from the line and recorded a 35 point game. She was awarded a Subway Player of the Game award.

"We came into the season after a rough preseason, so mentally for us to get a 2-0 weekend kind of set our standards right off the bat," said Veinot. "It was a tough game with everything that was happening. We had great off-ball movement and a lot of aggressive drives, so it just made it easy for all of us to score."

Both teams scored 26 in the fourth quarter, giving Acadia the ability to hold onto their lead and grab a convincing  80-69 win.

Audrey Rankin (Prince George's County, M.D.) was one point shy of a double-double, having grabbed 11 rebounds and adding 3 assists for good measure. Rankin was her team's Player of the Game. Teammate MacKenzee Ryan (Glace Bay, NS) posted a team-high 13 points.

Turnovers were costly for the Capers, giving up the ball 23 times compared to Acadia's 16. The Axewomen had 17 points off of turnovers but were shut down from the three-point line with only two threes to their credit.

Veinot led all scorers with 35 points, and Rachel Clouatre-Trudeau delivered 12 points. Mia Roberts added 10 points.

Acadia won their second game of the season 80-69 and head into Fredericton to take on UNB next weekend with a 2-0 start.

The 0-2 Capers play their next two games at home against Memorial next weekend.
