Capers add two recruits
December 8, 2011
Christmas has come a few weeks early for Head Coach Ness Timmons and the Capers women’s soccer team.
Timmons announced Thursday the commitments of striker Chelsea Currie and defender Kara MacKinnon to the Capers fold for the 2012 season.
“Chelsea and Kara are the type of student-athletes we are always looking for and it’s nice to have the local talents committing to us early,” said Timmons, a four-time AUS coach of the year. “Both of these girls are strong academically and leaders on and off the field. They are great student-athletes and this is a great way to start our recruiting year.”
Both Currie and MacKinnon have been prominent on the local soccer scene in recent years playing integral roles with the Riverview High School girl’s team which captured back-to-back NSSAF championships in 2010 and 2011 and the Cape Breton Under-16 Selects, who captured a provincial championship in 2010.
“I think the quality of female recruits in Cape Breton right now is as strong as anywhere in the province,” said Timmons. “From the high school league to the development these players have gained through Soccer Cape Breton, it’s a tribute to the quality of coaching and programs we have on the Island.”
A 5’5” striker from Coxheath, Currie has been a dominant scorer in the Cape Breton High School League and earned MVP honours last season. MacKinnon, a 5’8” defender from Westmount, has been the anchor defensively and has brought home three provincial soccer titles in her career.
Both girls grew up around Capers Athletics, attending the soccer matches and watching as Timmons developed the Capers into a national power in women’s university soccer.
Coming off an overtime loss in the AUS semifinals this past season, the Capers will return a strong core of veteran players, but Timmons expects both of his newcomers to contribute next season.
“Chelsea is a goal scorer plain and simple,” said Timmons. “She is great one-on-one, is very quick and has a nose for the net. Kara is a dominant backfield player. She has great athletic ability and is terrific in the air at both ends of the field.
“I expect both to contribute to our team right away next year and to be key players in continuing the strong soccer tradition that CBU has established.”
