Capers sweep Memorial in weekend soccer action

It was a successful start to the 2012 AUS soccer season for the Cape Breton University Capers men’s and women’s soccer teams as they both swept a pair of weekend road games from the Memorial Sea-Hawks in St. John’s, NL.
In men’s action, CBU fell behind early before storing back for a 3-1 victory over Memorial.
Shayne Hollis in the 36th minute, Sandro Rajkovic with the winner in the 47th minute and Martin Kowalksi in the 89th minute tallied for the Capers, who start the season 2-0-0.
Sean Fardy had the lone goal for Memorial, opening the game’s scoring in the sixth minute of play.
Saturday, Andrew Murphy stopped the only two shots he faced for the shutout and the first of his two weekend victories as the Capers downed the Sea-Hawks 2-0.
Gregg Whiting’s goal in the 44th minute would prove to be the winner for the Capers, who opened the season ranked No. 3 in the CIS Top 10 poll. Jason Massie would add an insurance marker in the 90th minute.
In women’s play Sunday, Tiffany O’Donnell stopped four shots to post her second shutout victory as the Capers dumped the Sea-Hawks 2-0.
Danielle MacDonald in the 41st minute and Devon Pierre in the 81st minute scored for the Capers, who sit atop the AUS standings with a 2-0-0 record.
Saturday, Shanice Maxwell and Chelsea Currie scored and assisted on each other’s goals in a 2-0 CBU win. Maxwell found the back of the net in the 17th minute while Currie wrapped up the scoring with her first AUS goal in the 87th minute. O’Donnell turned aside all three shots sent her way in the CBU goal.
The Capers will return to action this Saturday when they host the Dalhousie Tigers in their home openers. The women’s game will get under way at 3 p.m. with the men taking to the pitch at 5:15 p.m. Both games will be played at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex on the CBU campus.
