RTC Cape Breton Capers U12 Girls Capture Gold at Challenge Brossard
Soccer Cape Breton's Regional Training Center (RTC) Cape Breton Capers Under-12 girls squad travelled to Brossard, Quebec August 3-4 to participate in the Challenge Brossard International Soccer Tournament.
The girls played four games over the weekend against Quebec teams, starting off their campaign against St Hubert Spatial. Down a goal going into the second half, the game was completely turned on its head when Samantha Lawrence scored a spectacular equalizer from outside the box after beating a player. The momentum was with the girls and 10 minutes later Abby McNeil scored the winner sending the ball over the keepers reach. leading the Capers to a 2-1 win.
The second game against the Trois-Rivieres Rebelles saw the girls outplay their opponents for the majority of the game, but tehy were on the wrong side of a 1-0 decision.
Due to the scores of other tournament games, the girls had to win 3-0 against Greenfield Park Inter to qualify for the finals.
The Capers did just that and better, beating Greenfield Park Inter 6-0, with two goals coming very early on great wide play from Rebecca LeBlanc with Maddie Coleman and Caleigh MacPherson converting. The girls made it 3-0 by half time with Julia Currie receiving a great defence-splitting pass and dispatching with confidence. The second half was all Capers with Caleigh MacPherson, Tessa Dowie and Julia Currie scoring.
The girls had managed to give themselves a shot at winning a championship and had another chance to put a result right with a rematch against Trois-Riveres Rebelles in the final.
This game was night and day from the defeat earlier, with the Capers dominating from the start and winning every battle across the field. Rebecca LeBlanc broke a scoreless deadlocl midway through the first half, getting to the ball first and accelerating away from the defender and finishing to the left of the keeper.
Despite consistent pressure from teh Capers, one goal was enough, with the final whistle being blown and the RTC Caper Breton Capers winning a championship to bring home to Cape Breton.
