Brown makes early impact for Capers
September 14, 2013
It didn't take long for rookie Tamara Brown to make a name for herself with the Cape Breton University Capers women's soccer team.
Brown scored the winning goal for the Capers in a 1-0 win over the Acadia Axewomen last Sunday in Wolfville. It was her first Atlantic University Sport tally, and resulted in her team's first win of the season.
"After I scored, it was a huge relief," said the 18-year-old from Whitby, Ont. "I can say that I actually scored in a university game and it went in."
Brown and the Capers women boast a 1-0-1 record after their win over the Axewomen and a 4-4 draw with the defending AUS champion Dalhousie Tigers last weekend.
The Capers women's and men's soccer teams will host their home opening weekend at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex. CBU hits the pitch against the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers on Saturday and Acadia University on Sunday.
Brown made her final decision to play for the Capers program after visiting Cape Breton during the Canadian Soccer Association Under-18 Club Championships last fall as a member of the Richmond Hill Raiders of Richmond Hill, Ont.
"Even though I'm a freshmen, I don't feel like I'm a freshmen out there, I feel like I fit in and we all just mesh together," she said.
Capers head coach Ness Timmons said he's happy with the strong contribution from his team's rookies so far.
"Tamara Brown was very calm going in and slotting a goal home, kind of a clinical finish for us. It's tough to score in soccer, but Tamara will certainly add to the veteran players we have," he said. "We also have three other rookies who have some speed and can contribute right away. I can see two or three of these players working their way into the starting lineup."
The Capers men will try to get into the win column on their home turf this weekend. They suffered a 1-0 setback to Acadia after opening the season with a 4-2 defeat to Dalhousie.
CBU head coach Robbie Chiasson felt his club was on top of both games last weekend, but is looking for a full, 90-minute effort and smart soccer in order to get some positive results.
"I don't think we're very far off the mark," he said. "I knew there would be a learning curve obviously because we are young, there's going to be some bumps along the way. Hopefully, it's sooner than later because we can't fall too far behind."
The Capers teams play UPEI on Saturday at 4 p.m. (women) and 6:15 p.m. (men). Sunday, they challenge Acadia at 2 p.m. (women) and 4:15 p.m. (men).
