Once again, Capers in hunt for soccer title
November 6, 2013
The Cape Breton Capers certainly don't lack experience at the CIS women's soccer championship.
The Capers make their seventh appearance at nationals in nine years — and second straight — when the four-day Canadian university tournament begins play Thursday in Toronto.
"I think having experience under our belt should help us this week," CBU head coach Stephen (Ness) Timmons said Sunday after his squad captured the Atlantic championship with a 3-0 win over Acadia in Moncton.
"Experience is something that has to be earned and we have done that. The girls are all looking forward to flying up, settling in for a practice and getting ready for that Thursday evening kick-off."
Cape Breton, fresh off its seventh AUS banner in 11 years, is the only remaining undefeated team in the country (11-0-4 overall).
The Capers are led offensively by conference MVP Karolyne Blain, who topped the AUS in goals (14) and had two goals in Sunday's final.
Blain, keeper Tiffany O'Donnell, defenders Robyn Novorolsky and Allison Bell-Davies (AUS championship tournament MVP) and midfielder Robbyn McNeill were each conference all-stars.
"The girls are playing their best soccer right now," said Timmons, who was named AUS coach of the year last week.
The Capers won a CIS crown at home in 2007 but are 0-2 in each of their six other appearances at nationals.
They open against the host Toronto Varsity Blues on Thursday evening (8 p.m. AT).
"They're a solid test but like any nationals, you just look forward to that first game and hopefully into a quarter-final," Timmons said. "If the girls perform like they can, they can make some noise there."
The defending champion Trinity Western Spartans, Alberta Pandas (Canada West champions), Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (OUA champs), Montreal Carabins (RSEQ champs), Western Mustangs (OUA finalists) and Laval Rouge et Or (RSEQ finalists) are also in the field.
