Back in Orange!
The Cape Breton University Capers have made a great move by bringing back Mitchell Hanna as their new Performance Analyst coach. Mitchell had previously been a student assistant-coach as he worked on his degree at CBU, but now after a move to finish his schooling at Dalhousie, he has returned to the CBU Women's Soccer team as the Performance Analyst.
Hanna has a great resume of his own! Besides the Capers, he has coached Cape Breton FC U16-18 where he helped develop players. Hanna says that could really help him develop players because he has coached all age groups and it has prepared him for the upcoming season.
Coach Hanna commented on the fact that he is excited to be back "When you get the chance to help out such a great program you cannot say no" he added how great coach Ness Timmons is and how excited he is to be back working with him and help the team win. "Coach Ness has a resume that speaks for itself. He has run one of the best soccer programs in the country for a number of years now," Mitchell added. I then asked about Mitchell's role and for him to expand on what he is going to do for the team, and he said that his role is to watch films of games from the past and current seasons, and help the other coaches Ness Timmons, Robert White and Chad Power (Keeper Coach) to create matchups, game plans and strategies. Another role for Hanna is to watch the Capers games and see the pros and cons of each game and then have film sessions with the team to help them prepare and improve on all facets of the game throughout their season and career.
Hanna wanted to emphasize how much of a family the team is. "We have a motto" Hanna added, "We say attitude is everything!" A great motto to have for a team sport! Coach Hanna also said that his team isn't just about on the field and training "Being a student-athlete can be tough, you have to balance your studies with school. It's two full-time jobs, so if there's any way I can make their life easier I will do it to help them out".
The team has a lot of big things going this season! Before the season starts the team and coaching staff has a preseason trip to England to catch a few pro games and play some games with some of the best soccer players in all of England!
The Capers have started the season a perfect 4-0-0. They are currently ranked #2 in the National U Sports Rankings. Hanna is excited to coach this year and is hoping for the ultimate goal-the National Championship which he believes is not out of reach!
The Capers next game is this Friday as they travel to play Saint Mary's University. You can watch all the action on AUSTV.ca. Action starts at 5.00pm.
