CAPERS Finish 4th at National Championships
2022 U SPORTS Women Soccer Championship presented by Groupe Océan
Bronze medal match: Two penalty goals lead Gee-Gees to victory over Capers
November 13, 2022
Quebec City (U SPORTS) – The Gee-Gees won the bronze medal Sunday afternoon at the 2022 U SPORTS Women Soccer Championship presented by Groupe Océan on the back of two penalty goals in the second half, defeating the Cape Breton Capers 3-0 on the Université Laval campus in Quebec City.
The Gee-Gees are back on the national podium, like they did on their last time around at the 2018 Nationals where they won the gold. The Capers end the tournament in the fourh place, which was exactly their seed before the opening of the championship.
U SPORTS Player of the Year Soumaya Bouak set the play that opened the score in the 26th minute after breaking through on the right flank. She crossed the ball to Cassandra Provost, whose shot was partially stopped by keeper Haley Kardas. The ball still bounced across the goal line to make it 1-0 for Ottawa.
The Gee-Gees doubled their lead in the 62nd minute. A tackle on Olivia Allen in the box led to a penalty. Angelina Gendreau was precise from the spot. The story repeated itself in the 73rd minute, and this time it was Ella Chase who fell on the tackle at the top of the box and Katerine Delev converted the shot for the third and final goal of the game.
