Riverview's Mariah Hervé brings versatility to CBU track and field program
By Corey LeBlanc
Mariah Hervé will continue her athletic journey in her backyard.
The Howie Centre native has decided to don Caper orange as a member of the Cape Breton University (CBU) track and field program.
"I am really excited," the 17-year-old says of having the chance to fulfill her "dream" of being a university student-athlete at the varsity level.
Hervé, who started her athletics experience in Grade 5, explains that being able to compete – as an individual and part of a team – has always appealed to her.
"It was the best of both worlds," she explains, while noting that she had no interest in playing contact sports.
When it comes to her track-and-field experiences, Hervé says, "I have loved every minute of it."
That includes her time with the Ravens – her school team at Riverview – which she represented at the annual School Sport Nova Scotia provincials.
"It was a really valuable experience," Hervé says of competing in the 2022 meet in Stellarton, where she garnered a bronze medal in the high jump.
She adds, "It showed me what I have to do to reach the level that I wanted to be [in track and field]."
The high jump is the most recent event that Hervé – who has also competed in the 100 and 200 metres, along with relays, and the long and triple jumps – has added to her athletic resume.
"It was something new – another way for me to compete," she offers of her newest event.
Like most student-athletes with the small, but growing, Caper varsity program, Hervé will more than likely compete in a variety of events at the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) level.
"We are really pleased to welcome Mariah," CBU head coach John Hudec says.
He notes her medal-winning performance at school provincials.
"She did really well," Hudec adds, pointing to her hunger to improve.
Hervé has already started working with her CBU coaches and teammates.
"Everyone has been so welcoming – I am so grateful to be part of the Capers," she says.
Hervé adds, "I am always working to improve."
When it comes to attending CBU, Hervé notes the academic and athletic opportunities, along with its location.
"I wanted to stay close to home," she says.
Along with varsity athletics, Hervé – whose career aspiration is to become a lawyer – will study for her Bachelor of Business Administration degree in CBU's Shannon School of Business.
"I am very excited – I can't wait to get started," she says of her CBU experience.
