Three members of the Cape Breton Capers women's soccer team will take to the pitch at home for the final time this weekend.
Strikers Karolyne Blain of Sudbury, ON, Chelsea Currie of Coxheath and defender Kara MacKinnon of Westmount will graduate once the season comes to a close.
It will be a bit of déjà vu for Blain. She thought she was finished after last season, but wasn't accepted into medical school and decided to come back for her fifth and final year of eligibility.
Blain, the two-time reigning Atlantic University Sport MVP and perennial all-star, is the team's all-time leading scorer with 52 goals. She's also the unofficial all-time leading goal scorer in the conference.
"Last year, I didn't know if I was going to come back and play my fifth and I'm glad that I did get that opportunity," she said. "Now I know that this weekend is for real the last time I'm going to play on this home turf, so that's very bittersweet.
I'm very proud of what I have accomplished personally and what the team has accomplished over the last five years here."
Currie wraps up her fourth and final year with the team. She was named the AUS rookie of the year in 2012 and was an AUS first-team all-star that season.
"I used to come to these games when I was 12-years-old and you know early in life where your niche is," she said. "CBU was always on the top of my list, so it's really special."
MacKinnon said the 2015 Capers team is the best she's played on in her career.
Both Currie and MacKinnon have played together locally since they began in the sport.
"We grew up playing together. All of our accomplishments soccer-wise have all been together, so it's been great to experience this entire journey with somebody," said MacKinnon.
The Capers women (8-2-1) are second in the conference and hope to secure a bye into the conference semifinals this weekend. They host Saint Mary's on Saturday and Dalhousie on Sunday.
Each match begins at 1 p.m. at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex turf.
